Facing retirement

Facing retirement is hard for many people. Share the journey with others grappling with similar challenges and questions.

We understand that times have changed and so have our expectations for this next phase of life.  Many people want to shape their retirement years differently, yet find themselves in unchartered territory.  We offer support and guidance to help you determine what is right for you.

In Session 1: Facing Retirement we will help you figure out where you are now before you start to consider where you want to go next.  You will gain clarity around the specific challenges you are facing, as well as identify the opportunities that also lie ahead.  In a community of like-minded people, you can get a better sense of how you want to approach this next stage of life.

You will ask yourself two key questions: what am I facing? and what are my challenges and opportunities?.

EXPLORE

You will explore how…

  • TIMES HAVE CHANGED
We are living in the age of longevity. Whilst you may have decades of decent health ahead of you, few people thrive on 30 years of pure leisure. Decide on the balance you want to strike during this next phase.

  • NOT WORKING IS TOUGH
You are not alone. In a society, that values productivity and achievement, many people find it hard to be confronted with the prospect of not working. However, there is also opportunity in this challenge.  Take this time to reflect on who you are, and who you want to be, beyond your professional identity.

  • UNRETIRING IS A MINDSET
There is no one way to retire or unretire.  Whether or not you decide to remain professionally engaged, what is the mindset that you adopt around this next phase of your life?   We encourage you to think about your future as a time of continued growth and opportunity.

READY

You will leave more ready to…

  • QUESTION OUTDATED STEREOTYPES
Ageism is real. Combat prejudice by equipping yourself with facts. Your own age-related assumptions may also be holding you back. Take a good look at your own beliefs.

  • REASSESS YOUR CHALLENGES
Understand the challenges that you are facing at this time.  Taking an honest and realistic look at where and when you need to overcome a necessary first step.  Take inspiration from how others have reassessed some common challenges and plan your personal approach.

  • IDENTIFY YOUR OPPORTUNITIES
Unretiring can enable you to turn challenges into opportunities.  Whilst being honest about the challenges, we can also take an optimistic approach and look for the opportunities that this phase of life can bring.  Acknowledge the silver linings as well as the opportunities that lie ahead for you personally.

We recommend that you use a laptop or computer with a screen large enough for you to participate in session discussions and communicate with your peers effectively.

We particularly wanted to look at the psychological implications after retiring.  I personally found the lack of structure particularly unsettling – I felt like I needed to make a new life plan.  I was no longer clear about what I was doing everything for and I was uncomfortable with leisure as the focus of my time.  Looking at the challenges and turning them into interesting possibilities is what we are aiming for.
